Crew of the USS Tom Clancy,
Summer is upon us, the water beckons, and pool or beachside deckchairs exist as one of the perfect platforms to support a reading habit this season. So, in that spirit, as well as the spirit of wanting a thought provoking beach read that you will be able to use to wow fellow beach goers for your depth and sensitivity, may I present a list of five really excellent books about war you can bring to the beach.
Thanks for reading!
Matt
Richard Currey’s book is short; more of a novella, really, and you can finish it in an afternoon, but it will stay with you for life. Highly recommend.
This book is—in my opinion—better than Ken Kesey’s “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” which is, of course a very good book, but I also believe it is better than any of Jim Webb or Tim O’Brien’s Vietnam war stuff. This is a really, really good book.
It inspired a movie, which I have not seen, but will.
The Veteran Comes Back - Willard Walter Waller
You don’t get writing like this anymore:
This book is the war in Afghanistan’s Dispatches and will resonate with any American veterans of the Afghanistan war.
Obviously I’m biased—but this is one of the best books on how the military functioned (or didn’t) during the Global War on Terror.
That’s it for a short dispatch, all the links I’ve linked to are Amazon affiliate links so if you buy from them I get a percentage, but also these are great books to find in a used bookstore, at the estate sale of a weirdo in Northern Virginia, or via whatever your preferred bookseller. We acknowledge that Jeff Bezos is evil, even as we try to divert some of his money our way.
Until next time!
Thank you.
I feel the urge to read up on the Boer Wars. Any suggestions?
