Maybe you like Tom Clancy. Maybe you love Tom Clancy. Maybe your dad read Tom Clancy or your Uncle plays Tom Clancy video games.

Maybe you’re Harrison Ford, and have played a Tom Clancy character in both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.

Perhaps you are Willem Dafoe, who played Mr. Clark in Clear and Present Danger.

If you are either of those two gentlemen, please accept my compliments on your performances. Mr. Dafoe, your wardrobe was outstanding.

But maybe you’re not Harrison Ford or Willem Dafoe, and you’re also pretty sure you’re not Anne Archer either, so you have no direct connection to a Tom Clancy film.

Maybe you’ve never heard of Tom Clancy.

Well, in that case, you’re in for a treat. Because this is a substack about Tom Clancy that is also a substack about all sorts of other things; spy stories, war stories, absurd stories, but all true stories, and all told by Matt Farwell. Farwell is a man writing this sentence in third person who’s spent the last eleven years writing about the strangest, most compelling stories in the military, intelligence and national security worlds.

He’s written for places like Playboy, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The New Republic, USA Today. He’s written books like American Cipher: Bowe Bergdahl and the US Tragedy in Afghanistan (Penguin Press, 2019) and now he’s writing this. Before that, he was an infantryman in the United States Army, a student at the University of Virginia and the United World College of the American West. Do with all that information what you will.

If you have a pulse and you also breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, you’ll love The Hunt for Tom Clancy.

Thank you for joining me on this exciting journey. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your enemies, tell your lovers.

It’ll be great, and it’ll be great at least once a month.

So, here’s the deal: every new article / post will be available to anyone for about the first two weeks, and then I’ll lock ‘em up behind a paywall; that way no one gets left out of the joy of reading “The Hunt for Tom Clancy.” Love you all. Please subscribe though, this is a labor of love but that means it is still labor. Love you all.
